Yacong Sun is a Chinese composer passionate about composition, food, and nature. Her musical creations often reflect the beauty of the natural world. At the same time, she draws inspiration from Chinese culture, honoring both historical figures like Xiang Yu and mythical characters like Sun Wukong.
Yacong sees herself as a musical storyteller, infusing narrative meaning into every composition and assigning expressive significance to each musical section.
Yacong writes music for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Her piece Starry Sky has been performed by Unheard-of//Ensemble. She is also active in film scoring—she contributed to the soundtrack of the TV series Murder in Bb Minor, Season 3, and composed music for an animated short by UNCG Art School. Yacong collaborated with director Chengguang Dong on an animated film score. She is currently in charge of coordinating student performance outreach at a university.
Yacong graduated from Georgia State University with a Master’s degree in Composition, where she studied composition with Dr. Nick Demos. She received a full scholarship and also served as a graduate assistant, mentoring undergraduates in music theory and aural skills.
Yacong holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Composition from UNC Greensboro, where she studied composition with Dr. Mark Engebretson and Dr. Alejandro Rutty, and piano with Dr. Andrew Willis. She was also a recipient of UNCG’s International Student Scholarship.
